Creativity vs Technique:
What's more important?

There are so many schools of thought on how to teach art, and on what's more important: creativity vs technique.

Creativity vs Technique
Just Technique

Some traditional schools focus solely on technical training (drawing and painting technique) for 2 years, and then expect students to suddenly start being creative and using their technical skills to express themselves in year 3.

But … because students haven’t been developing their ‘creativity muscle,’ most don’t know how to experiment, what they want to make, or who they want to be as artists when they’re let loose!

Creativity vs. Technique
Just Creativity

Other schools focus solely on developing one’s unique ideas and concepts
, with minimal technical training.

The issue here is that: it’s difficult to express ideas effectively without technique!

Throughout my education I attended both types of schools: very traditional ateliers focused on technique, and contemporary art schools focused on concepts, ideas, and creativity.

Creativity vs. Technique
Merging the Two

In my opinion, it’s ideal to develop both technique and your creative voice simultaneously, so that you can figure out:

  • what you want to express through your artwork, and
  • how to express it most effectively (this is where technique comes in!)

In terms of creativity vs. technique: one should support the other.

This is why I’m thrilled to be starting the Creative Drawing Studio!

Creative Drawing Studio

Here we’ll focus on finding your unique creative voice alongside technical training. The theme of Month 1 is Ideation: Start Discovering What You Want to Make and Who You Want to Be as an Artist.

Not only will you have access to all foundational drawing courses in Drawing Decoded – we’ll also investigate experimental drawing techniques to bring ‘play’ back into your drawing practice (especially if you’ve been overly focused on accuracy for a while!)

Enjoy:

  • live lectures on creativity, composition and more,
  • strategy sessions to figure out the first (or next) steps of your drawing projects,
  • a personalized monthly drawing critique (this can be on creativity or technique),
  • a community forum to post wins and challenges to get support with,
  • prompts to help you get into the 'creative zone',
  • and more!

Enrollment is open until September 2, and we start on September 3rd!
